The Louvre or the Louvre Museum is the world's largest art museum
and a historic monument in Paris

Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are
exhibited over an area of 782,910 square feet

The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace, originally built as the
Louvre castle in the late 12th to 13th century

During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the
Louvre should be used as a museum to display the nation's masterpieces.

The museum opened on 10 August 1793 with an exhibition of 537
paintings, the majority of the works being royal and confiscated church property

The Louvre Pyramid is a large glass and metal pyramid designed by
Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei, surrounded by three smaller
pyramids, in the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace.
The large pyramid serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum

It is the world's most visited museum, averaging 15,000 visitors
per day, 65 percent of whom are foreign tourists

Guide Lily, explaining the layout

Remnants of the fortress are visible in the basement of the museum.
Due to urban expansion, the fortress eventually lost its defensive function,
and in 1546 Francis I converted it into the main residence of the French Kings

The Venus de Milo was added to the Louvre's collection during the reign of Louis XVIII.

Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the most famous painting in the world

One picture made from two.
Elsa was sitting at one end of the hall, not realizing
how closely her pose resembled the Mona Lisa at the other end
